The Residents Gallery, Montsalvat, as a 10 day solo exhibition, presented as an 8 channel, site responsive sound installation, 9th to 20th January, 2019. Despite just having two ears we interpret sound in 3 dimensions. In order to produce a binaural beat, the two tones sounded in the ears must both have frequencies below 1,500 Hz with a difference of no greater than 40 Hz between them. In a real world environment you can tell whether sound is above, below, behind, to the right, in the distance and so on. Williams and Royaards' unique and powerful exhibition interweaves archival material gathered from the Imperial War Museum’s 'Northern Ireland Collection' against contemporaneous video footage and sonic field recordings of helicopter surveillance at moments of protest in London. As a human we can tell where sound is coming from. The environments recorded in the exact present-day locations where the photographs were taken. Each photograph is connected to two soundscapes: 1. Taking over UCL Urban Room, Bartlett-based artists/researchers Henrietta Williams and Merijn Royaards set out to reveal how the British State developed aerial knowledge systems in colonial space and how these now play out over contemporary London. By following the 1863 Swiss journey of the British photographic genius William England, the exhibition presents a series of his stunning stereoscopes in a newly constructed Kaiser Panorama. Its dramaturgy builds entirely upon sound. Techniques of aerial surveillance were developed by the British Army over Belfast during the 30 year conflict - the so-called Troubles - that have since been adapted by the National Police Air Service for use over London and other UK mainland cities.
