Make sure the mirror has no chips or cracks. Check the RA and Dec controls make sure they move somewhat smoothly, although these can likely be cleaned up with solvent and regreased, provided there is no damage to the gears. For $75, that's probably reasonable, provided it comes with all of the accessories and isn't rusty anywhere or sticky in motions. Tighten up the tripod securely when using it, and place a milk jug partially filled with sand on the accessory tray to help stabilize it. The slightly heavier 4.5" scope is perhaps somewhere on the line of being undermounted, but it is usable, as it's more mount than some scopes are sold on today. For that telescope, it is what I would term just barely adequate. I have that same mount and use it with a 90mm f/11 Meade refractor. You'll have to decide that of course.īut a 4.5" scope can show a fair amount. If you can afford more, a 6" scope will be a better option.
